Participants will discover & work with a ‘Personal Legacy Voice’ of an ancestor at least three generations removed. The in-studio work will involve ensemble and individual physical & vocal exercises designed to awaken ancestral histories stored in our blood and bones. Our methodology is a combination of 'Afrisporic' influenced performance traditions that open gateways for the emergence of historic truths from critically anchored personal places. Performers / participants will be asked to choose, research, profile and eventually embody a compelling moment in the life of an ancestor. Following the workshop, Artists may then work to develop proposals that they may submit to urban ink for consideration for the Arrivals Project: A Personal legacy Exchange, a multidisciplinary performance project with ten artists from across the country. Whether in theatres, workshops, educational or clinical settings, Playback Theatre draws people closer as they see their common humanity. Using simple and fun theatre exercises, participants will be introduced to the Playback form and discuss ways this form can be used in their own communities as a way to create dialogue and sharing. It is not necessary to have prior theatre experience to take part – you just need to bring your playful self and any story you would like to tell.
