The Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre is proud of its script services for SPC members.  Script development is provided according to members' needs - from cold readings of scripts, through more intensive workshops with actors, director or dramaturge, to the Spring Festival of New Plays, a week of public staged readings of the best new plays of the year.

Script services provided by SPC:

  • Spoken response(s) by the SPC dramaturge (In person, one-on-one sessions are preferred);
  • Written response(s) by the SPC dramaturge (only after a one-on-one consultation has taken place)
  • Rehearsed reading(s) by actors
    Workshop(s) with actors and/or director and/or dramaturge
  • Staged reading(s) with actors and/or director and/or dramaturge
  • Other services suggested by the playwright which meet the mandate of the SPC and are within the context of SPC's resources and the demands of the membership as a whole

NOTE:  These services are available year round.

Workshops

In-house workshops, closed to the public may run for an afternoon or several days and provides the playwright with access to a director, dramaturge and actors so playwrights can see and hear the play as they work on it.  At any time, SPC playwright members may submit a script, along with a workshop proposal, for consideration by a dramaturgical committee of three playwrights.

Open Readings

Several times a year the Playwrights Centre invites members to bring scripts or scenes to informal cold readings.  Actors working with our in-house dramaturge give the playwright a chance to hear the words and then to discuss what has been read.  These readings may be held in different centres around the province if there is a demand.

Accessing These Services

To access the above services you must be a Saskatchewan playwright with a current 'Playwright Membership' in the SPC. To apply for script services, please send the following information:

  • A typed copy of your script (one-side only on standard 8.5"x11" bond paper, preferably 12pt font)
  • A letter explaining what service you are requesting and how you think the script will be developed by receiving that service.
  • Date your title page and include which number draft it is along with all contact information.
  • All plays must be submitted in Standard Play Format. Plays that are incorrectly formatted may be returned to the playwright for reformatting.
  • We accept plays formatted in either of the following styles: Standard American Format or SPC Play Format (click on the name to see an example)

All scripts are assessed by the Dramaturgical Committee.  If you are unsure what your script needs, you can leave that to the discretion of the Dramaturgical Committee.  Just indicate in your cover letter that you would like the committee to recommend which SPC service, if any, would best serve the submitted script.
